Transmission for the Beetle Empty Transmission for the Beetle

Post by Shadow Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:33 am

This is what I posted on vwvortex. I have a feeling its going nowhere though.

First off, let me say for the record, that im not very familiar with chassis codes, engine codes, or transmission codes.

I have a 2001 Beetle 1.8t and the engine code is AWV. ( I know that one) I have some modifications done including exhaust, intake, tune, and larger turbo. I replaced my clutch about 11k miles ago, and now I lost my 3rd gear. It just grinds and grinds until I switch to 4th. Im assuming the sync row **** the bed. So what I want to do, is take the 6 speed transmission out of the Beetle S, and mate it to my engine. Giving me longer gears as well as a 6th gear. Can anyone tell me if this has been done before, any info on parts I would need, and just basic information, if any. Thanks in advance

Just some quick skimming on vwforum says it is possible with a 2001 1.8t, and newbeetle.org seems to verify only without mentioning engine size. Below are the links that I am referencing...

http://www.vwforum.com/forums/f16/5-speed-6-speed-swap-2001-1-8t-35207/

http://newbeetle.org/forums/transmission-talk/34650-5-speed-6-speed-manual-swap-outcome.html

I am sure with a bit of "trolling" their threads so you dont have to actually be the one flamed for asking anything will help out. I just used the search feature and that is what I found in 5 minutes.

Although, here is another option that is guaranteed to work and might get you a little more close to your Beetle...

I think this option is a lot cooler. Plus, if you have never torn into a trans, this will definitely get you acquainted with one the gear-head way.

Did you put any research or thought into this? Highly interested in this swap...

Thats why I asked about the kit that uses your 5-speed trans and you just switch the internals to the 6-speed.
