Project Big Sexy...

Post by PureAdrenaline on Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:13 pm

This is just a quick review to bring all up to speed...

This is not the first thread I had in this build. I had deleted the former thread.

So far, the project is as follows...
1. I took my (secret#)hp 383 stroker that I had been building in my Camaro out of the Camaro due to the motor getting the better of the uni-body, ripping it. FAIL
2. Dismantled the Camaro and junked it.
3. Pulled my 1979 Monte Carlo into the garage and took the nose off of it.
4. Ran out of time for quite a while, so here I am.

The old Camaro...

The first body I bought. I was going to stick to Camaro. Those are the tires that are going on my Monte...

Then I seen her, and nostalgia got the best of me. Then I did my research and realized that she was better than any Camaro platform.

58,000 Documented miles and literally almost rust free.

Not too much to look at just yet... She will be though.

Where I am currently sitting...

Step 3. Clean, re-seal, chrome, and paint the engine.

So... This is what I am looking at as of right now. I am finally getting freed up in the schedule department, so I should have some momentum tomorrow.

OK, so today, I skipped the cleaning stage and went right to the install stage.

Going in.

And set into place.

Now dont worry, I didn't completely skip this step. I put it in the car to transport it to work so I can use a lift and an engine stand to strip her down fully, clean her, paint her and the transmission, and replace the old seals so there is no leaks guaranteed. I am not just going to skimp it.

So, while I wait to find out if I got this job for good so I know if I only have a week or if I have forever, I am going to work on some engine and interior cosmetics. Scuff and paint the headers, do the headliner, potentially the carpet too.

Ohhh yeah. Nice to finally be getting greasy on her again. I didn't have time for the wire-n-fire, but I found out that I do NOT have the room in my garage for the headliner until I get the fenders back on the car or at least not next to it LMAO.

I did, however,

Lay out and prep some of the upper end parts...

Fit the studs and anti-percolating gasket/seal on the intake. I did sit the carb on it(no picture) but took it off, Also placed the thermostat, gasket, and housing back on it...

And cleaned, prepped, and ceramic coated the headers with 2k degree heat resistance. I know that it is only borderline enough for my engine, but it was the best stuff I could find for now...

Ok, so after all the effort to refurbish the headers, I found out that they absolutely will NOT clear in the Monte because of their shape and design,,, So, I decided to go ahead and get some new ones.

Thats what I said. I got them as factory seconds believe it or not. For "thin chrome". I have put the only nick in them. Aside from what I did, they are pretty flawless for $80 Hooker's.

Ok, no pictures for work done today, but I will have some to add probably tomorrow. Today, I pulled the drive train back out of the Monte Carlo. I separated the 700R4 from the motor and currently have that transmission draining. I then put the engine on the engine stand to get it ready for the tear down. I also moved the TH400 to get that ready for the prep work so that when I am done with the engine, it can be mated to it. I got this all done in the middle of working on my boss's Rustang, so that is why progress was slow.

Which brings me to today's progress...

In the middle of the teardown to replace ALL gaskets so that I dont have to do this again for a while...

And for the doubters who try to call bluff on my build's previous work....

This nice little stamp is literally on every major bolt in the engine...

And although I wont take pictures of all the vitals to give too much away, this is a nice little insight to what may be inside...

OK, I went with a black block and blue heads scheme.

Heads:

Two coats of white. This being the first...

Two coats of blue...

After letting the heads harden for a few hours, I decided to play a bit and kinda sit most of the top end together to see how it will look when done...
Intake...

Now with headers, carb, and Lokar dipstick...

Now, the above picture also has the valves back in with the valve lash set. That picture also gives you a look at the motor mounts. I have a chrome oil pan on the way, and with exception to a few other chrome pieces, the rest of the motor is going to be painted in scheme. Well, that's all for today.

While that was setting up, I put the new studs in the rear of the car and put the tires on it...

The picture does these tires NO justice. That is until you compare them with the 2 foot long lights on the rear of the car lol.

Everyone who has been around asking to hear it has jumped when she fires. I even made sure to ask them all if they have sensitive hearing. I have to actually time it though, this video is still just from when I slapped it together and did an initial timing angle setting. I guess I was pretty close.

Then because all the motor work is mostly done, I got the car about 90% put together...

Just a few smaller details to do. Brackets underneath and shit like that. Then just to finish wiring it and continue my hunt for another transmission.
